YIT selected to implement seven day-care centres in Turku using the lifecycle model - order value approximately 72 million

The City Council of Turku selected YIT as the implementer and the provider of life-cycle services of seven day-care centres located in Turku. YIT is responsible for the design, implementation and 20-year service period of the day-care centres, which also includes responsibility for the optimal energy consumption of the properties. The buildings will be owned by the City of Turku. The total value of the agreement for YIT is approximately EUR 72 million. The contracts will be signed in June 2025 and are recorded in the order book in stages as construction begins.

The lifecycle project includes new day-care centre buildings in Pääskyvuori, Pihlajaniemi, Skanssi, Educated, Varissuo, Uittamo and Martti. The total area of solid wood-framed day-care centres is about 15,000 gross square metres. The premises will be used by about 970 children of early childhood education age and about 250 staff members. Child-centered design solutions promote children's development. Construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 2026, when the planning phase has been completed. All seven day-care centre building are expected to be completed by April 2029.

"In the coming years, Turku will invest historically much in day-care centres and schools. The progress of the lifecycle projects means that we will be able to repair and build the Turku day-care centre network even in an accelerated schedule to meet the needs of the city's residential areas. With the new facilities, functional playgrounds and regional attraction factors will be added to the areas," said Piia Elo, Deputy Mayor of Turku.

The carbon footprint of the building and construction site during its life cycle is to be kept as low as possible. The goal is a low-emission construction site using renewable energy sources. Five stars are sought for the project in the Rakennustieto environmental classification, which is the highest possible environmental classification level. Buildings will be more energy efficient and will have photovoltaic systems that will cover at least 30% of their real estate and lighting electricity needs.
