As the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains Regions' premier medical community for more than 30 years, the Institute for Limb Preservation (https://www.limbpreservationcolorado.com/institute-for-limb-preservation-orthopedic-surgeon-denver-colorado.html) at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center aims to provide a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to amputee treatment and care, with primary research focusing on postoperative functional recovery.[image]

The OPRA™️ Implant System has successfully improved the lives of more than 500 amputees in the past 30 years, and this long track record has attracted the Institute for Limb Preservation to introduce the Osseointegration Program at their center. The center announced its Osseointegration Program (https://integrum.se/press-release/?r=C1C79AD2F2DEEBC4&i=9) with the OPRA™️ Implant System early this year. The program is led by orthopaedic oncologist Dr. Daniel Lerman and plastic surgeon Dr. David Schnur.

The OPRA™️ Implant System Gets Amputees Back to Quality of Life
In an interview with Integrum AB, Dr. Lerman and Dr. Schnur share their experience with[image] the technology.
"Patients report to me that the greatest change is being able to feel the ground." Dr. Lerman said. Amputees with an Osseointegrated prosthesis can feel the surface texture of an object, that is to say, the sense of touch of their missing limb is restored to a certain extent. For lower limb amputees, the system revolutionizes their life; they can walk freely without looking at the ground and know that they are walking on carpet, hardwood floors or grass.
"The other game-changer is the ease of putting on and taking off the prosthesis." Dr. Schnur said. For many amputees, especially above-knee amputees, wearing a prosthetic socket is a time-consuming routine. With the OPRA™️ Implant System, the Osseointegrated prosthesis can be placed on in less than 20 seconds, and it is even easier to take it off. "Our goal at the Institute of Limb Preservation is for amputees to go back to the functional level they were before their amputation, and Osseointegration is the natural next step in amputation care," he added.

The Prospects of Osseointegrated Prosthetic Implants

"When it comes to osseointegration, it's about giving choices and body autonomy back to amputees." Dr. Lerman said, "We share the outcomes of Osseointegration with them, and they can choose to either go that direction or maintain the functions of their current prosthesis."
"Osseointegration is the future of amputation care." Dr. Lerman said, "For instance, some above-knee amputees cannot wear a prosthetic socket because their stump is too short. With Osseointegration, we only require 8 cm of residual femur. This method allows them to walk again."

Dr. Schnur envisions that losing a limb in the future is only a temporary setback: "I think the next step is targeted muscle and sensory reinnervation for prosthetic limbs," he explained, "A prosthesis can be truly integrated back into the patient and make the patient whole when it's powered by the patient's own muscles and has sensory inputs to it."

For more information and to find out if you might be a good candidate for the OPRA™️ Implant System, please contact the Institute for Limb Preservation at (800) 262-LIMB (5462). Amputee care navigator Jennifer Flores will guide you through the initial considerations for the Osseointegration Program (https://www.limbpreservationcolorado.com/osseointegration-orthopedic-surgeon-denver-colorado.html).
