PRESS RELEASE 11 November 2025 at 10:00 am

Honkarakenne Oyj (Honka) and MEYER Floating Solutions Oy unite world-class marine engineering with Finnish non-settling CLT log technology to deliver climate-conscious and wellbeing-driven solutions for architectural floating homes, tourism and leisure. The first projects are the Floating Wave, a floating surf centre in Hamburg, and a combined residential and office development in the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

The Finnish shipbuilding industry has once again hit the headlines across the world with new icebreaker deals to the United States. Now, the same cutting-edge expertise is combined with experiential wood architecture in a collaboration between MEYER Floating Solutions and Honka. MEYER Floating Solutions is part of the MEYER Group, one of the world's leading and most innovative shipbuilders.

The partnership responds to the needs of urbanisation by combining ecology, cost-efficiency and experiential construction. Floating construction offers solutions for rising sea levels and dense urban areas. The solution by Honka and MEYER Floating Solutions is the first in the world to enable scalable and cost-effective large-scale production in a short time.

Targeting large housing and commercial projects

Their first project, Floating Wave in the Hamburg harbour area, features a surf centre with a restaurant, fitness area, and shop. The parties are also collaborating on a residential construction project in the Berlin-Brandenburg region of Germany, which includes several floating homes. Further details about the project will be shared as the permitting process progresses.

In particular, the target is massive and scalable B2B real estate development projects and serial production. MEYER’s global partner network combined with Honka’s supply capacity of prefabricated CLT log kits provide the partners with a leading position in the market.

“We are in a unique position globally — no other player has the capacity to deliver projects as massive as ours. Honka’s new generation of non-settling CLT logs, Honka Fusion+, enables real estate developers to quickly produce large-scale production more cost-effectively than our previous materials. I look forward to manufacturing iconic on-water structures from Finnish massive wood around the world,” says MEYER Floating Solutions’ CEO Kaj Casén.

Together, the partners offer two delivery models: fully prefabricated floating buildings for urban and resort sites, and prefabricated modular systems for remote or inland sites where site access is limited. The recently released first joint collection, Honka Floats, includes seven customisable models for architecturally immersive floating buildings.

Honka CLT log — a durable and healthy choice for floating construction

Casén was inspired by CLT logs when building a Honka home for his family. The healthy indoor air and natural aesthetics of his home have provided a soothing living environment. According to him, solid wood combines qualities that will be valued in future construction.

“The CLT log developed by Honka has been used to build houses in more than 50 countries. The material has been tested in all of the world’s weather conditions, from severe frost to scorching heat and humid climates. It is an excellent material for building on water. It is also an environmentally sound choice, as a solid wood building minimises its environmental impact throughout its life cycle,” says Casén.

Demand is increasing for solutions that enhance the experiential nature of construction and improve well-being. Marko Saarelainen, The President and CEO of Honkarakenne, highlights the importance of collaboration that brings together the leading technologies in their respective industries.

“The new Honka Fusion+ CLT log we have developed enables more ambitious and ecological wooden construction and provides a better technological performance. Our CLT logs can be combined with other materials spanning large surfaces, such as glass and metal, to give our architecture a spectacular look. Our carefully finished wood creates tasteful and elegant environments with excellent acoustics and ambience,” says Saarelainen.

The solution appeals to tourism operators seeking unique, scalable accommodation. The product is equally suitable for the construction of apartments, entertainment, sports centres and restaurants.
